The Pochuck Boardwalk: New Jersey’s Most Instagrammable Trail
When people think of the Appalachian Trail, they usually think of steep, rocky climbs. But in Vernon, the AT takes a detour across a massive, lush wetland via a mile-long elevated wooden boardwalk. It is flat, accessible, and stunningly beautiful in any season.
The Highlights:
The Suspension Bridge: About a mile in, you’ll cross the 110-foot Pochuck Quagmire bridge. It’s a great spot for photos and a perfect "turn-around point" if you aren’t looking for a long hike.
Wildlife Watching: Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles, turtles, and herons. If you’re lucky (or unlucky, depending on your perspective), you might even see a cow or two as the trail passes through a local pasture.
Accessibility: Unlike most of the Appalachian Trail, this section is flat and easy to navigate, making it perfect for families with strollers, casual walkers, or anyone looking for a peaceful "forest bath."
Pasture Crossing: As you continue past the boardwalk, the trail leads into a cow pasture where you can get an up-close look at local farm life—just remember to stay on the path and respect the "moo-vers."
Visitor Hack:
Parking is tricky! The main entrance is on County Road 517. Do not park on the residential side streets (like Meadowlark Dr)—the town is very strict about ticketing.
Pro-Tip: If the 517 shoulder is full, try the small lot on Canal Road. It’s a slightly longer walk, but much less stressful.
